For my senior thesis in my graphic design program, I explored the question, "Where did all the birds go?". This question came about in my Visual Language class I took in my Junior year. On the first day, fellow students and I were asked by our professor to complete research on a topic that interests us and see what came from it. My love for birds drew my search to the national bird conservation site Audubon. There, I learned a shocking fact about my favorite animals, they were disappearing. In fact, since 1970, 3 billion birds have disappeared. This drastic drop in population began to raise questions. The following year, I decided for my thesis I wanted to explore how I as a designer could make a change through my work in supporting the conservation of our feathery friends.
The Why Birds campaign explored all the questions that I had while promoting an interest in birds and their contribution to our local ecosystems. The information presented throughout the campaign needed to be engaging and interactive to make conservation feel exciting instead of a burden. So for my visual language, I explored a style that resembled a scrapbook to make those exploring the main website feel as though the user is exploring a journal rather than an actual site on a computer.
Why Birds campaign features a website, designed to be easy to follow, making exploring the site and learning about our feathered friends user friendly. There are also other promotional elements for the campaign such as posters, postcards and stickers.
